Other features that have come to distinguish the long-running fighting series have also been translated to this third-person combat adventure, such as environmental hazards like acid pits, deadly spikes, and powerful "Multality," "Brutality," and "Fatality" attack moves that can only be performed with precise input in certain conditions. The game engine is designed to allow characters to attack and defend themselves from enemies in any direction - ahead, behind, or on either side.įor better or worse, monks will encounter other memorable characters from the Mortal Kombat series, including Sub-Zero, Scorpion, and Goro. As either of two of the series' Shaolin monks, Liu Kang or Kung Lao, players will make their way through the various realms of the extra-dimensional fighting competition from a third-person perspective. An inspired change from the norm, but not nearly as much fun.Inspired in part by the action-RPG-styled "Konquest" segments of 2004's Deception, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks is a full-fledged fighting adventure that leads players in a violent, epic struggle through the storied Mortal Kombat universe.
It's fairly good fun, but it's fairly monotonous and gets rather boring after a while. And it's not to do with one-on-one sparring, instead it's one character receiving instructions from Rayden to take out the seemingly endless army of monsters. Here you have only two characters to choose from, as opposed to the veritable array of characters in the last two entries. Fans of the arcade style of MK will be sourly disappointed with this latest entry. Shang Tsung is p!ssed at losing the last battle, so he traps Liu Kang (who I thought was killed in Deadly Alliance?) and Rayden under a rapidly destructing rock and, with Rayden's guidance, Kang is left to battle a bunch of huge goblin like creatures to make his way to the final.
STAR RATING: ***** The Works **** Just Misses the Mark *** That Little Bit In Between ** Lagging Behind * The Pits From what little plot I could make out to this latest addition to the MK series, here goes.
